After being embroiled in a controversy, former Pakistani skipper Mohammad Hafeez has issued a clarification on his remarks about the Pakistani legends of the 1990s. Mentioning this on his social media handle on X, Hafeez said his statement was taken out of context while the media had fabricated it.
Hafeez Issues Clarification After Controversy Erupts
A few days ago, Mohammad Hafeez, the former Pakistani skipper, made comments on former Pakistani players of the 1990s and 2000s era about their failed attempts to win any ICC tournament. However, his comments on the Outside Edge live show did not go down well with many of the former players.
Hafeez mentioned that despite winning the 1992 World Cup, none of the other teams were able to win any ICC tournament, despite being in the final during the 1999 World Cup, where they lost badly against Australia.
Immediately receiving a reply from former Pakistani pacer, Shoaib Akhtar, who mentioned that they won 73 one-day games against India, and it is them who did it. To which Hafeez replied that, of course, they had a huge legacy behind them but nothing that could inspire the next generation, considering they did not leave anything significant to give to their next generation.
Following this, another former Pakistani pacer, Waqar Younis, took a dig at Hafeez, mentioning Wasim Akram and his stats from their career, highlighting their Test and ODI appearances alongside the number of wickets they have taken on his social media account on X.
After all the hustle and bustle, Hafeez mentioned that his statement was taken out of context without any significant facts about what he said.
He then apologised to everyone regarding the statement he made and mentioned that it was not meant to disrespect anyone or that it was not a personal criticism but a collective failure on their side to win any ICC tournament from the past tournaments.
"Some of the media houses are fabricating the actual content. Context of discussion was all about Teams winning ICC events to inspire coming generations. Therefore I explained how the greats of game from Pakistan with all the cricket talent they have couldn’t win ICC events (post 92 WC) in 1996, 1999 & 2003. It was never a personal criticism on any of the respective player from my side."
Hafeez's Statement Follows Pakistan's Champions Trophy Debacle
Mohammad Hafeez's statement came after Pakistan's failure to qualify for the next round in the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to register a single victory after losing to India and New Zealand and then being unable to play against Bangladesh due to a washout. They ended the tournament with a single point and on the last position in Group A, despite being the official host of the tournament.
