Gujarat Titans, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, fell short of Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in the Eliminator to bow out of the IPL 2025 race. Chasing 229 in New Chandigarh, the Titans managed to accrue just 208-6 from 20 overs, despite racing to 151-2 in 13 overs at one stage of the match.
Shubman Gill, who was recently appointed as Team India Test skipper, had his Gujarat Titans captaincy called out by former Indian cricketer and CSK legend Robin Uthappa. The cricketer-turned-commentator believes that Titans’ strategy under Gill seemed more “reactive than proactive”.
Uthappa says Shubman Gill failed to course-correct vs MI
While speaking on JioStar, Robin Uthappa called out Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill for utilizing fast bowler Prasidh Krishna in the powerplay overs, even though the latter has had success in the middle overs.
Uthappa also lambasted Titans fielders for dropping crucial catches in the knockout match against Mumbai Indians. He said:
“GT’s strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep. His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct. The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship.”
Compatible to Robin Uthappa’s claims, Prasidh Krishna got taken out for 36 runs in his first two powerplay overs. During his return at the death, the speedster leaked just 17 additional runs off his final two overs to finish with overall expensive figures of 2-53. Krishna also picked up the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir, both during the slog overs.
Nonetheless, the defeat to Mumbai Indians has now ended Gujarat Titans’ IPL 2025 campaign. The Shubman Gill-led franchise had finished third at the end of the league stage.
