Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has addressed the growing speculation around star batter Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness, following MI’s thrilling 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 Eliminator on Friday. The five-time champions defended a mammoth total of 228 runs to book a spot in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.
Suryakumar Yadav has been a pillar of MI’s batting order this season, was seen receiving some attention from the physios during and after the game, sparking concerns over a potential injury ahead of a crucial knockout match against PBKS.
Jayawardene Breaks Silence On Suryakumar Yadav's Injury Scare
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jayawardene reassured and stated that there were no serious concerns reported by the medical staff.
"I think these are a few old souls that we get a bit of bandaging, a bit of time. And I saw boys getting it done, a few others as well," Jayawardene told reporters at the press conference.
He acknowledged that the intense IPL schedule can lead to minor physical niggles, but brushed off any major injury fears regarding Suryakumar or others in the squad.
"We know it's a tough schedule for us, but I think everyone's healthy, everyone's fit. And don't worry about those little tightnesses. I haven't heard anything from the physios. I'm pretty sure that even with one leg, these boys will be playing for us. Don't worry," he added.
A Record-Breaking Season For SKY
In the Eliminator, Suryakumar Yadav made a valuable 33 off just 20 balls, including single boundary and three towering sixes. This knock marked his 15th score of 25 or more in the season a new record in T20 history for the most such scores in a single tournament.
It is also important to note that SKY is MI’s top scorer this season. The star batter has made 673 runs so far in 15 matches with a strike-rate of 167.83 and average of 67.30. He currently sits second on the overall IPL 2025 run-scorers list and remains in contention for the coveted Orange Cap.
His consistency to score runs has been important in Mumbai’s resurgence after a shaky start to their campaign. From languishing at the bottom of the table in the early weeks, MI showcased a great comeback to win 8 out of their 14 league matches and punched their ticket to the playoffs.
