England minced West Indies in the first ODI at Edgbaston in Birmingham to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Putting up a comprehensive all-round performance, as many as four English batters tonked majestic half-centuries while fast bowlers Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton picked up six wickets between them.

Jacob Bethell Leads England’s Batting Charge

Being put into bat, the Englishmen made the most of the pristine batting conditions on offer at the Edgbaston Stadium by racking up 400-8 from 50 overs. As many as four batters, including opener Ben Duckett (60 off 48) and senior man Joe Root (57 off 65) crafted cunning half-centuries in the innings.

Captain Harry Brook also composed 58 off 45 balls with five fours and three sixes while Jacob Bethell bludgeoned 82 from 53 to lead England’s late charge in the slog overs.

For the West Indies, fast bowler Jayden Seales picked up fighting figures of 4-84. His pace mates Alzarri Joseph and Justin Greaves also chipped in with two wickets each.

Saqib, Overton Flatten West Indies For 162

In pursuit of a record 401-run chase, West Indies slipped to 53-3 inside 10 overs, and eventually to 124-9 before Jayden Seales’ late onslaught (29* off 14) saved the visitors from an out-and-out embarrassment.

English seamer Saqib Mahmood picked up the wickets of Justin Greaves, Keacy Carty and Shai Hope in an extensive opening spell to claim impressive figures of 3-32. Brydon Carse also took the key wicket of Brandon King while Jamie Overton ran through the lower-half of West Indies batting order to pick 3-22. Spinners Jacob Bethell and Adil Rashid picked up three wickets between them to fold up West Indies for just 162 in 26.2 overs, as England took home the opening honors by 238 runs.
