GT got eliminated from IPL 2025 on Friday [Source: AP]
Gujarat Titans concluded their IPL 2025 campaign last night, as Mumbai Indians (MI) handed them a 20-run defeat in the Eliminator at Mullanpur Stadium. After being put into bowl, GT had a torrid time on the field, with MI posting a massive total of 228 runs.
Chasing such a huge target wasn't going to be a walk in the park for the Titans, who finished on 208/6, losing the game by 20 runs. As their IPL 2025 campaign is done and dusted, let's figure out what went wrong for the Shubman Gill-led side in the tournament.
1. Jos Buttler's Absence

(Jos Buttler For GT in IPL 2025)
- Swashbuckling English batter Jos Buttler emerged as a prolific performer for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. Before leaving the IPL due to national commitment, Buttler hammered 538 runs at a marvellous average of 59.78 and a strike rate of 163.03.
- He formed an invincible batting trio with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan; so, his departure created a void in the GT lineup, with the team feeling his absence in the eliminator against MI.
- Kusal Mendis, who came in as Buttler's absence, couldn't live up to the hype, dropping straightforward catches and scoring only 20 runs during the chase.
- Thus, Buttler's absence was a major reason behind GT's downfall, as they were pretty much dependent on their top three to succeed with the bat.
2. Rashid Khan's Horror Show Throughout The Season
- Talismanic spinner Rashid Khan sustained his rough patch throughout the IPL 2025. The leg spinner managed only nine wickets while recording an average of 57.11 and a strike rate of 36.67 in the tournament.
- His struggles in the eliminator were evident, as the MI batters collected 31 runs without losing a wicket off his four overs. Being a lead spinner, Rashid's stats were certainly below par and his decline was a primary reason why GT faltered in the knockout clash.
3. Pacers' Disappointing Performance In Eliminator
- Prasidh Krishna had a breakout IPL season this time, scalping 25 wickets in 15 matches. He emerged as GT's go-to pacer across phases, particularly in the middle overs.
- However, as he had an off day in the eliminator (recorded figures of 53/2 in 4 overs), GT looked out of sorts to compensate for his failure. While Mohammed Siraj was safely negotiated, MI batters made merry on Gerald Coetzee's lacklustre line and length, collecting 51 runs off his three overs.
- Thus, the pacers' underwhelming performance proved costly for GT in the eliminator, leading to their unexpected exit from the competition.
