The RCB franchise reached the final of the IPL 2025 season with a record win over Punjab Kings in the first qualifier. Senior England cricketer Heather Knight has been ruled out of action for the time being owing to an injury. In other news, men’s captain Harry Brook took charge of England in the series opener against West Indies in Edgbaston.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, May 29.
RCB March Into IPL 2025 Final By Crushing Punjab
RCB outclassed table-toppers Punjab Kings in the first qualifier to seal a spot in the finals of the IPL 2025 season. Bowling first, fast bowler and comeback Josh Hazlewood and uncapped spinner Suyash Sharma picked up three wickets each to skittle Punjab Kings for just 101 in 14.1 overs. Yash Dayal also collected two huge wickets in his four-over spell.
Chasing 102, Phil Salt smeared 56* from just 27 balls as RCB soared past Punjab Kings’ total with eight wickets and 10 overs intact in the game.
RCB, PBKS Secure Huge IPL Playoffs Records
With RCB blanking Punjab Kings with 10 overs to spare, the franchise secured a huge record of notching up the biggest win, in terms of number of balls remaining, in the history of the IPL playoffs. The Punjab Kings, on the other hand, folded up for just 101 runs in 14.1 overs to record the second joint lowest team total in IPL playoffs history, equalling LSG’s 101-run total against Mumbai Indians from the 2023 edition of the tournament.
Prabhsimran Singh Joins Rare IPL Club
Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh managed to score just 18 off 10 balls against RCB in the first qualifier. Nonetheless, in doing so, the 24-year-old soared past the 500-run mark this IPL 2025 season, thus joining an elite list of batters to reach the coveted landmark as an uncapped player. He has joined the likes of Shaun Marsh (2008), Suryakumar Yadav (2018), Ishan Kishan (2020), Yashasvi Jaiswal (2023) and Riyan Parag (2024) to become only the sixth uncapped cricketer to aggregate either 500 or more runs in a single season. Prabhsimran’s tally currently stands at 517 runs from 15 innings at an average of 34.46.
Heather Knight Ruled Out Of WI And India Series
Heather Knight has been ruled out of England Women’s squad from their entire home ODI series against West Indies. Moreover, the 34-year-old will miss England’s entire home summer, which includes another series against India and the impending Women’s The Hundred 2025 season, owing to a hamstring injury she sustained earlier this week.
Currently in race against time to attain full fitness, it remains to be seen if Heather Knight can make her return to top-flight cricket for the ICC Women's World Cup in September later this year.
Harry Brook Begins ODI Reign With WI Series
The English cricket team began its new white-ball chapter under the leadership of new captain Harry Brook. Taking on West Indies at Edgbaston in Birmingham in the first ODI of their three-match series, the hosts racked up 400-8 from 50 overs. Captain Brook himself started off his full-time captaincy gig with a sublime 45-ball 58.
Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jacob Bethell also shaped cunning half-centuries, while former captain Jos Buttler made 37 runs off 32 balls.
