In a high-stakes IPL 2025 Eliminator match, Mumbai Indians showed their class once again. Playing against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh, MI delivered a strong performance to win by 20 runs. But in a match full of big moments, one name stood tall, Jasprit Bumrah.
At one point, the game seemed to be slipping away from Mumbai. GT were in a strong position, 148 for 2 after 13 overs and needed just 81 runs from 42 balls. Washington Sundar was on fire, having just smashed Trent Boult for two sixes and a four. Alongside him was the in-form Sai Sudharsan.
Then came the moment everyone was waiting for, Jasprit Bumrah was brought back into the attack. And he delivered immediately.
With his very first ball, Bumrah bowled a perfect yorker to get rid of Sundar. It was a huge breakthrough at a critical time. The energy shifted, and suddenly Mumbai were back in control.
AB de Villiers Knew It Was Coming
Watching this all unfold was former South Africa legend AB de Villiers. Speaking after the match, he shared a small moment from his living room:
"Credit to Hardik for holding Bumrah back until the right time. Sai had been playing him well, so delaying his return was a smart move. Before Bumrah came back for his final two overs, I told my son, 'This game isn’t over until he’s done bowling.' Once again, he showed why he’s one of the best," De Villiers said on JioStar.
De Villiers also praised MI captain Hardik Pandya for being patient and holding Bumrah back for the right time. It was a smart move, one that paid off.
Mumbai’s Batting Sets It Up Vs GT
Earlier in the evening, Hardik Pandya chose to bat first and it turned out to be the right call. Rohit Sharma and Jonny Bairstow gave MI the perfect start. Bairstow added 47 runs before getting out. Rohit, on the other hand, got lucky, he was dropped twice but he made the most of those chances. He smashed 81 runs off just 50 balls, hitting 9 fours and 4 sixes along the way. Thanks to their efforts, Mumbai posted a massive total of 228 for 5.
In reply, GT got off to the worst possible start lo,sing captain Shubman Gill in the very first over. But then came a solid partnership between Sudharsan and Sundar, which kept Gujarat in the game.
However, Bumrah returned and removed Sundar, the momentum shifted, and GT couldn’t keep up. Mumbai’s bowlers, especially Bumrah and Boult, stayed calm in the final overs and sealed the win.
Mumbai Indians now head to Ahmedabad to face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 on Sunday, June 1.
