In a match full of twists and turns, Afghanistan clinched a sensational 21-run victory over Australia at the T20 World Cup 2024 on Sunday, leaving Group 1 wide open.

After the defeat, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh candidly acknowledged that his team was thoroughly outplayed.

AUS vs AFG: Mitchell Marsh sends stern message to India post-Afghanistan defeat

"They probably got 20 too many. And honestly, they played well today. We were outplayed today," Marsh admitted, tipping his hat to Afghanistan.

The decision to bowl first, made after much deliberation, did not pan out as planned, however, Marsh indicated confidence in his decision despite the outcome. Reflecting on Australia's performance, Marsh did not mince words.

Yet, he remained optimistic about his team's prospects, highlighting their experience and ability to bounce back. "We are an experienced group. We will be back next game."

The Afghan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60 off 49) and Ibrahim Zadran (51 off 48) stitched together a hard-fought 118-run partnership, posting a challenging total of 148/6.

Australia struggled to find their rhythm, with only Glenn Maxwell shining with a gritty 41-ball 59. Once Maxwell fell, the writing was on the wall for the Aussies, who crumbled to 127 all out in 19.2 overs.

Looking ahead, Marsh pointed out the urgency of securing a win in their next game.

"First and foremost, we need to win, and there is no better team to do it against in world cricket. But, credit to Afghanistan for pulling it off tonight," he concluded, giving credit where it was due.

Australia's experienced squad will undoubtedly look to regroup and come back stronger against India.
