In a candid address at the Indian Chamber of Commerce event, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on his brief captaincy stint, expressing a tinge of regret for not having a longer tenure at the helm of the Indian team.

Known for his aggressive demeanour and incredible commitment, Gautam Gambhir reflected on his cricketing journey, highlighting his "team first ideology" that guided his career both as a player and mentor.

“I have always thought about performing for the fans, and that has been my thought since the last year of my training career. In the middle, I got this honour of captaining India for six games. I tried doing it to the best of my ability,” Gambhir remarked, casting a glance back at his days in the blue jersey.

Despite leading India for a short span, Gambhir harbours no ill feelings about not having a longer run as captain.

However, the former cricketer did mention one particular regret that still lingers. Reflecting on the 2011 World Cup final, Gambhir said:

"But, I wish I had finished that game," referring to the match where India beat Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium with skipper MS Dhoni (91*) scoring the winning runs with a mighty six.

According to Gambhir, it was his job to finish the match and not leave it for others to come and finish it. The southpaw added that if he could, he would go back and hit the winning runs ahead of MS Dhoni.

"It was my job to finish the game, rather than leaving someone to finish the game. If I had to turn back the clock, I would go back there and score the last run, irrespective of how many runs I scored,” concluded Gambhir who scored a match-winning 97.

Notably, on the topic of potential future roles, Gambhir remained coy. Speculations are rife about him succeeding Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian team, but Gambhir kept his cards close to his chest.
