Suryakumar Yadav pipped the likes of Axar Patel and captain Rohit Sharma to win the ‘Best Fielder’ medal after India’s 50-run win over Bangladesh at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Stationed near the boundary during the Bangladesh innings within the opening powerplay overs, the cricketer made a dive forward to complete a sensational catch at deep square, thus accounting for the wicket of opening batter Litton Das.

Remarkably, Suryakumar received his medallion at the hands of a very special guest during India’s post-match celebration in the dressing room.

Sir Vivian Richards hands Suryakumar the medal

Former West Indies cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Sir Vivian Richards arrived to his namesake venue at Antigua on June 22 to attend the Indian dressing room at the behest of the team management after Rohit Sharma and co. thumped Bangladesh by 50 runs.

Shortly after India’s fielding coach T Dilip announced Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel as the three leading contenders for the ‘best fielder’ honor, the legendary West Indies batter handed the same to Suryakumar for the latter’s outstanding fielding efforts to dismiss Litton Das.

Sir Vivian Richards also congratulated the 33-year-old, and delivered a very special speech for the Indian team in lieu of their unbeaten run so far at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Team India, under Rohit Sharma, will now face Australia in their final Super Eight match of the tournament at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet. The much-awaited contest will be staged on June 24 and the action will commence from 8:00 PM IST onwards.
