Afghanistan stunned Australia at Kingstown’s Arnos Vale Ground to register their first win of the Super Eight round of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The outcome also opened up multiple possibilities for the semi-finals, tendering each of the remaining two Group 1 games a must-win one for the competing nations.

Here’s the timeline of how AUS vs AFG panned out in Kingstown:

AUS vs AFG Highlights: Gurbaz, Zadran Smack 50s In 118-Run Opening Stand

Afghanistan’s in-form openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran took the attack to a spin-heavy Australian bowling line-up after being invited to bat first. After taking 40 runs off the powerplay, the two cricketers went on to smack their respective half-centuries and shared 118 runs together for the opening wicket.

While Gurbaz made 60 from 49 balls to register his third 50-plus score of the tournament, Zadran listed six boundaries to score 51 runs off 48 deliveries in an opening stand that lasted nearly 16 overs.

AUS vs AFG Highlights: Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa Put The Brakes On Afghanistan

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis landed the opening blow for Australia, albeit in the 16th over of the Afghanistan innings by accounting for the wicket of half-centurion and well-set batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Senior spinner Adam Zampa also struck twice in one over towards the death to dismiss Ibrahim Zadran and Azmatullah Omarzai as Afghanistan’s 118-0 became 122-3 in the space of seven deliveries.

AUS vs AFG Highlights: Pat Cummins Finishes With A Historic Hat-Trick

Australian captain and pace maverick Pat Cummins further restricted Afghanistan’s middle-order from flourishing in the death overs by claiming his second hat-trick in three days. The speedster dismissed Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib off successive deliveries to finish with 3-28 as Afghanistan managed to score just 148-6 from their 20 overs despite being graced with a fiery opening stand.

AUS vs AFG Highlights: Australia Lose Top Three To Naveen, Nabi In Powerplay

Chasing 149 for a win, Australia lost firebrand opener Travis Head for a three-ball duck to Naveen-ul-Haq, before seasoned cricketer David Warner mistimed a sweep off Mohammad Nabi straight towards Noor Ahmad at short fine.

Naveen-ul-Haq also accounted for the wicket of rival captain Mitchell Marsh for just 12 as Australia slipped to 32-3 in 5.1 overs.

AUS vs AFG Highlights: Afghanistan Survive Glenn Maxwell Scare In Historic Win

Still seemingly haunted by Glenn Maxwell’s 2023 ODI World Cup blinder at the Wankhede Stadium, Afghanistan bowlers once again found themselves at the receiving end off a yet another potential run-chase masterclass from the all-rounder. Amidst tumbling wickets at the other end, the cricketer kept the Australian chase alive by smacking 59 runs from just 41 balls in the middle overs.

However, Maxwell's dismissal to Gulbadin Naib (4-20) dented Australia’s chances before Naveen-ul-Haq (3-20) and the 33-year-old Afghan all-rounder handed Afghanistan a stunning 21-run victory.

The outcome opened up the Super Eight round wide open as teams like India, Australia and Afghanistan all vie for the two semi-final slots from the Group 1 points table.
