‘Must Be Questioned, The Timing...’ - Shaheen Afridi Criticises PCB For Haris Rauf's Ban

In a recent development in Pakistani cricket, Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf faces criticism and consequences from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The 30-year-old right-arm fast bowler has been banned from participating in any overseas league until June and has also had his central contract terminated by the PCB.

The punishment comes in the wake of Haris Rauf's refusal to participate in the three-match Test series against Australia. This decision has drawn the anger of his teammate and T20I captain, Shaheen Afridi, who has questioned the timing of the PCB's actions. Afridi expressed his concerns, stating,

"I don’t want to say much about the decision, but the timing must be questioned."

Despite the setback, Shaheen Afridi praised Haris Rauf for his resilience, affirming that Rauf will always prioritise playing for Pakistan. Afridi stressed, saying,

"Haris Rauf is a strong man, and the punishment from PCB won't affect him. It was improper to reveal the results at this particular time, as even the PCB will acknowledge. As always, Haris is prepared to play for Pakistan and is doing well."

The conflict began when Rauf declined to travel to Australia for the Test matches, citing fitness concerns, despite earlier agreeing to do so. This decision led to Rauf being warned of serious consequences. Pakistan's chief selector, Wahab Riaz, expressed disappointment, stating that Rauf should have played, especially when other bowlers were sidelined due to injuries.

During Rauf's absence, Khurram Shehzad, Mir Hamza, and Aamer Jamal were called up to fill the void. Meanwhile, Rauf opted to play for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24.

Despite the controversy, Rauf returned to represent Pakistan in the T20I series against New Zealand, where he managed to take seven wickets despite Pakistan's series defeat.

Wahab Riaz supported PCB's decision to grant Rauf a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play in the BBL, citing the importance of maintaining his rhythm for the T20I series against New Zealand. However, with Rauf's central contract revoked and his overseas league participation restricted until June 30, 2024, the situation has taken a new turn.

Meanwhile, both Afridi and Rauf are gearing up to represent Lahore Qalandars, with their first match against Islamabad United in the PSL 2024 opener scheduled for Saturday, February 17.
