In a dramatic turn of events at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane faced a rare dismissal in his 16-year career during the Ranji Trophy 2024 clash against Assam. Rahane, batting on 18 runs, was given out for obstructing the field after a throw from Assam's Denish Das struck him as he attempted to return to the crease. However, Assam later withdrew their appeal during the tea break, allowing Rahane to resume his innings. This act of sportsmanship showcased the spirit of the game.

The match saw Mumbai's dominance, with their bowlers restricting Assam to a mere 84 runs in the first innings. Mumbai's Shams Mulani and Mohit Avasthi starred with the ball, claiming crucial wickets, and Shardul Thakur made a special return, taking 6/21.

In response, Mumbai's batting shone brightly, with Prithvi Shaw and Shivam Dube leading the charge. At the end of day one, Mumbai stood at 217/6, enjoying a lead of 133 runs.

This unusual incident marked only the second time in the Ranji Trophy 2024 season that a player was given out for obstructing the field, the previous instance being Meghalaya's Jaskirat Singh against Mizoram.

Ajinkya Rahane, at 35 years old and having represented India in 85 Test matches, faced a memorable but challenging moment in his illustrious career. Despite being granted a second chance, Rahane couldn't capitalize further, being clean-bowled at a score of 22 runs.

Rahane has been struggling with poor form lately and has not been able to perform well in any matches of the Ranji Trophy 2024. His dismal form has raised doubts about his return to the Indian team.
