Rohit Sharma’s future with Mumbai Indians (MI) has become a hot topic ever since the Indian Premier League (IPL) announced its updated retention rules for 2025. Teams are now allowed to retain only five players, which can include overseas or capped Indian players, alongside one mandatory uncapped player. With this new rule, fans are anxiously wondering whether MI will retain Rohit, especially after his recent dip in form and a change in MI’s captaincy last season.
The Mumbai Indians’ camp experienced a major shake-up last season when Hardik Pandya was appointed as the team’s captain, taking over from Rohit. However, the team struggled under the new leadership and ended up at the bottom of the points table. Former MI spinner Harbhajan Singh believes that MI will not let Rohit go.
According to Harbhajan Singh, MI should not overlook Rohit’s value. Harbhajan feels experienced players like Rohit are crucial for the team’s comeback. He commented on Star Sports,
"Mumbai Indians is a team that hasn’t played well in the last two to three years. They’ve been a champion team, a very good team, and as far as I know, they will definitely think of building a team for the future. But that doesn’t mean they won’t add experienced players this year.”
Harbhajan’s Top Picks For MI Retention
Harbhajan also shared his predictions on MI’s retention strategy. He believes that, along with Hardik Pandya, MI should keep Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rohit Sharma.
"Last year, they made Hardik Pandya captain, and I think he will definitely be retained. Jasprit Bumrah will be retained, Suryakumar Yadav will be retained, and the question remains whether Rohit Sharma will be retained. He has just won the World Cup as a captain, so I think he should be retained, and he will be. That will make four players, and if there’s a fifth player, then Tilak Varma will be retained. Tilak Varma is one of those players who will be very useful for Mumbai Indians in the future to win matches. When it comes to bowling, I don’t think there’s anyone else they would want to retain, so Nehal Wadhera could be a good option for them. He is an uncapped player, so he should be picked,” he added.
How Did Rohit Sharma Perform In IPL 2024?
Rohit Sharma's 2024 IPL season was surprisingly awesome, scoring 417 runs in 14 games with an average of 32.08 and a strike rate of 150. He played a remarkable 105-run innings against Chennai Super Kings, and overall, his numbers were quite impressive. Hence, Harbhajan firmly believes that MI won’t risk letting him go in the 2025 mega auction.
