On October 27, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a significant announcement: Mohammad Rizwan will lead Pakistan’s white-ball team on their upcoming tour to Australia. This decision, made by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, marks a fresh start for the team, following Babar Azam’s recent decision to step down from the captaincy. In a press conference, Naqvi also revealed Agha Salman as Rizwan’s vice-captain, adding depth to the leadership team.
Shortly after his appointment, Rizwan shared his thoughts with a hopeful message for fans. In a video posted by the PCB on their official X account, Rizwan spoke passionately, encouraging fans to think positively. He said,
"Jab hum batting karein aap is baat pe na darein ki hum out na ho jaaye, out na ho jaaye. Humse positive ummeed rakhiye, boundary ka ummed rakhiye. Aise jab hamaari bowling ho, yeh na darein ki catch drop na ho jaaye, chaunka na ho jaaye. Aap positive sochiye ki yahan se yeh catch karega, yeh out karega. Jab hum koi event pe jaa rahe ho, toh yeh na darna ki hamaari kom haar jaaye. Aap humse positive ummeed rakhna, positive sochna. Hum apni or se poori jaan lagaayenge."
This statement reflects Mohammad Rizwan’s commitment to leading the team with optimism and confidence.
"Last series jab humne Australia mae khele thi toh aisa hi tha ki hum haar match jeetne waale thae, bilkul close jaa kr hum haare hai." he added. (In the last series we played in Australia, every match was almost ours to win, but we lost very closely)
"Humne kuch chizo ko notice ki hai aur waha jaa kr unpe kaam kare or usme se hum positive le. Inshallah, Australia ko Australia mae haraenge." (We have noticed a few things and will work on them when we go there, taking positives from it. Inshallah, we will beat Australia in Australia.) Rizwan added.
Mohammad Rizwan’s Captaincy Experience
Although Rizwan has only briefly captained the national side as a stand-in for Babar Azam during a series against New Zealand, he’s not entirely new to leadership. His experience leading Multan Sultans to victory in the 2021 Pakistan Super League (PSL) shows he has the skill and temperament to guide a team under pressure. However, this tour to Australia will mark his first time leading Pakistan in international limited-overs matches.
Pakistan’s limited-overs series against Australia will consist of three One Day Internationals (ODIs), starting on November 4. The second match is scheduled for November 8, with the final game on November 10.
