Shubman Gill regained his lost touch with the bat by smacking an imperial third-innings century against England in the Vizag Test. The 104 runs he pounded on Day 3 of the Test match helped India set up a match-winning 399-run target for the visitors.

The innings marked Gill’s first 50-plus score in 13 Test innings, and only the third century of his overall Test career. The dashing opening batsman, who holds a Test best score of 128, believes he missed out on making a bigger century against England. Notably, his father Lakhwinder Singh shares a similar opinion as revealed by the cricketer himself after India’s series-levelling win.

Shubman Gill reveals father’s opinion on century

After Team India bowlers enveloped the visitors for 292 to secure a 106-run win on Day 4, star batsman Shubman Gill reflected the match-defining century he unleashed during the second Indian innings.

While speaking with Kevin Pietersen and Zaheer Khan during the post-match celebration, Gill revealed that his father wanted him to score a bigger century by going beyond the 104-run mark. He said:

“My father told me ‘You’ve missed out on a big century'. I said 'I agree, Papa'. Thank God he let me come out of the hotel today.”

After racing to 104 runs, a well-set Shubman Gill employed an ambitious reverse-sweep off Shoaib Bashir only to get holed out by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes. Regardless, Gill’s innings extended Team India’s lead to 398 runs over England by Day 3 of the Vizag Test.

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah and legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin demolished England’s run-chase response with timely wickets, and eventually kept them 106 runs down to level the five-match series 1-1.

Shubman Gill will now turn up for Team India in the third Test of the series, set to be played between February 15 and February 19 at Rajkot.
