Pakistan pace maverick Shaheen Afridi shot himself to unprecedented stardom with his match-winning spell against India at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai. The speedster snagged the key Indian wickets of openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma upfront with the new ball, before accounting for the prized scalp of well-set half-centurion and perennial dangerman Virat Kohli.

Shaheen’s scintillating three-fer kept India’s famed batting line-up down at 151 in their Group 2 encounter, before ‘Men in Green’ openers Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan mowed down their target with all 10 wickets intact.

The win marked a significant occasion in Pakistan’s cricketing archives, as they had secured their first ever triumph over arch-rivals India in any World Cup match after 12 failed attempts.

During a recent live interaction on X (formerly Twitter), Shaheen Afridi recalled the significance of Pakistan’s win, and named the person whom he had sought advice from prior to the game.

Shaheen Afridi says 2021 win a ‘memorable’ one

Shaheen Afridi described Pakistan’s 2021 T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE a “memorable” one for them, even though they failed to go past Australia in the semifinals that year. The speedster highlighted the significance of the tournament owing to Pakistan’s historic win over arch-rivals India.

“We had never defeated India in the T20 World Cup before. The 2021 edition was very memorable for us! I phoned Lala (Shahid Afridi) and took advice from him. We also wanted to win for Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez,” Afridi said on a live interaction.

Shaheen Afridi’s match-winning spell against India catapulted his popularity across the cricketing spectrum. The cricketer soon became Pakistan’s primary new-ball choice for all formats of the game.

Back in November 2023, he was also awarded Pakistan’s limited-overs captaincy over previous skipper and active teammate Babar Azam.

As of now, Shaheen Afridi is in the UAE for the ongoing ILT20 2024 season. Representing the Desert Vipers franchise, he has already collected six wickets from his first five outings.
