Facing persistent heat and criticism over his failings, Shubman Gill reinforced his class, talent and temperament with an excellent third-innings century in the Visakhapatnam Test against England. With his spot in the Test team on the firing line, Gill bounced back with a terrific century in just 132 balls.

The 24-year-old prodigious young right-hander came up with his third Test match century for India after undergoing sustained strife and facing continuous flak from fans and experts over the last two years in the longest format. 

Since making his previous Test hundred in Ahmedabad in March 2023 against the mighty Australians, Gill had made just 173 runs from his last 11 innings and seen his overall average disappointingly slip below the 30-run mark after batting 40 times for India in the longest version. 

Shubman Gill Returns With A Bang

However, the youngster responded to the noise around him with a scintillating knock, featuring his high-class strokes and solid defence as the talented batter repaid the faith shown in him by the team management and the selectors over the last 12 months.

Even as naysayers were breathing down his neck, the Punjab batter had coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma shielding him at the No.3 slot. The famed duo would've been delighted then to see Gill produce a magnificent century and an influential one in the context of the England Test and the series. 

As India aimed to stretch their first-innings lead of 143 beyond England's reach by the start of the fourth essay in the Test match, it was Gill who came up with a long haul after the early departure of openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. He piled on the pressure on the tourists who face the enormous task of chasing a score in excess of 400.
