Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra believes that the Gujarat Titans franchise might not retain premier fast bowler Mohammed Shami amidst the latter’s injury concerns ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Shami has been out of competitive cricket since the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup last year in November, considering he sustained an ankle injury during the tournament.

As of now, Shami is recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru in a bid to get back into national reckoning in time for India’s five-match tour of Australia later this year.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently claimed that there is a possibility of Gujarat Titans not retaining Mohammed Shami because of the speedster’s injury concerns.

Taking to his YouTube channel, he stated that as of now, there is no player in the Gujarat Titans line-up who is worth the retention sum of Rs.18 crore. He said:

“They don’t have any other player who is worth Rs 18 crores, who will be sold for Rs 18 crores if you release them, whether it’s Kane Williamson, Mohammed Shami, David Miller, or any other name. I am saying this team might not retain Shami because of injury concerns.”

While Mohammed Shami is yet to make full recovery, he is currently making rapid progress at the NCA in Bengaluru. Earlier this year, he also underwent a successful surgery in February.

Shami is aiming to attain full recovery in time for India’s five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia later this year. The Indian speedster will also be eying a return to competitive cricket before IPL 2025 mega auction, which is set to be held either during November-end or early-December.
