The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former cricketer and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin in connection with a money laundering case tied to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The case revolves around the alleged misappropriation of Rs 20 crore worth of funds allocated to improve Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium's facilities.

Mohammed Azharuddin, a former Indian cricketer renowned for his elegant batting style and significant contributions to Indian cricket, stepped into administration following his retirement from international cricket.

He served as the president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) before being banned from contesting future elections, citing corruption charges.

As per several media reports, Mohammed Azharuddin is accused of misappropriating funds during his tenure. He apparently mismanaged Rs 20 crore allocated for purchasing diesel generators, firefighting systems, and canopies for the state's Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad.

As the investigation widened, the probe agency, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), issued a summons to Mohammed Azharuddin. He has been booked on money laundering charges and is expected to appear before the ED today.

The ED is basically looking into whether these funds were used improperly during Azharuddin's tenure at the HCA.

Hyderabad government in talks with BCCI to set up new cricket stadium

In delightful news for cricket fans in Hyderabad, the state government is planning to build a brand new international cricket stadium on the outskirts of the city.

CM A. Revanth Reddy revealed in the assembly that talks with BCCI are in motion and allocated INR 321 crore to sports from the 2024-25 state budget.

Notably, this move could provide a new home for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is currently the only venue to host IPL games in the city.
