Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form lately, even leading the Indian team during his first-ever stint as Test captain in England. Under his leadership, India managed to draw the series 2-2.
His impressive performance has led to rumours that he might replace Rohit Sharma as captain in One Day Internationals (ODIs) too. Former cricketer Mohammed Kaif has shared his thoughts on this possibility.
Shubman Gill Is Ready To Take Over From Rohit Sharma
Kaif believes that Gill is ready to take on the role of ODI captain as well, especially with growing uncertainty around Rohit's future as the captain. Kaif said on his Youtube channel,
"He was such a calm captain. He led with composure under pressure. He will get the ODI captaincy as well because we don't know how long Rohit Sharma will continue as captain. Gill is ready to take over. He scores in white-ball. He has performed well as captain here in Tests and led from the front. When you go with a young team, you have to do both things – score with the bat and do well as captain. A brilliant tour for him overall."
Meanwhile, there have been changes in Indian cricket, especially with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announcing their retirement from Test cricket within days of each other. Some think this was done with the 2027 World Cup in mind, hoping to remain fit and focused for the upcoming limited-overs tournament.
However, the road to the 2027 World Cup may not be as simple as it seems. With the Indian team undergoing a quick transition, especially in Tests, it’s unclear whether Kohli and Rohit will be a part of the 2027 World Cup.
While, both Kohli and Rohit are focusing on staying fit. Rohit is working hard to be in top shape, and Kohli has also set the World Cup as his next major goal.
According to a BCCI source, "Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time."
Notably, India will play their next ODIs against Australia, followed by three ODIs against South Africa in November and another three against New Zealand. But for cricketers in their late 30s, this limited schedule may not be ideal.
The decision to play in the 2027 World Cup will not be rushed. Ultimately, the final decision will depend on whether Kohli and Rohit continue to have a place in India’s ODI plans.
