Days after Stuart Broad hit out at David Warner’s comments on Joe Root, the duo came face-to-face at The Hundred 2025 competition. Broad, the official commentator, awkwardly demanded clarification of Warner’s comments.

The Ashes mind games are officially underway, and Warner has already taken the first swing. In a cheeky jibe, the former Australian opener claimed Joe Root could be an easy target for Josh Hazlewood, unless, as Warner put it, he "takes the surfboard off his front leg."

While Warner’s comment was clearly meant to stir the pot, Stuart Broad, England’s retired seamer and now pundit, wasn’t letting it slide. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Broad fact-checked the Aussie batter, stating that Hazlewood has only dismissed Root lbw three times in Tests.

Stuart Broad Confronts David Warner For Targeting Joe Root

Meanwhile, days after this social media banter, Stuart Broad interviewed David Warner on the sidelines of The Hundred competition. Speaking for Sky Sports, Broad confronted Warner by asking if he usually calls his front pad ‘surfboard’ or if it was meant as a jibe at Joe Root.

"I have to ask - do you always call your pads surfboards or do you save that for Rooty?" Broad asked.

To this, Warner replied that since he is short, he often uses the word ‘surfboard’ for his pads. The Aussie added that he forgot to reply to Broad’s tweet but will consider it after the game. The duo shared a good laugh, and things didn’t escalate any further.

"You've got to understand that I'm small, so I tend to say they are surfboards. I liked your [post] but I forgot to tweet back actually, I will do that after the game," Warner replied.

Meanwhile, David Warner failed in his first game for the London Spirit. He scored just 9 runs off 10 balls, and Spirit succumbed to 80/10 in the first inning. The Oval Invincibles, also the defending champions, chased down the total in 69 balls to clinch a 6-wicket win.

“I’m A Walking Headline,” Warner Takes Self Jibe

Meanwhile, ahead of The Hundred game, David Warner had a chat with BBC Sport and called himself a ‘walking headline', unapologetically owning his remarks about Joe Root.

"I'm a walking headline. I think it's our job as cricketers to build up a series. Root is a hell of a player and to try to distract him before he gets to Australia, that would be fantastic," Warner said.

He added that he would continue the banter around the Ashes to hype up the series and perhaps distract English players before they set foot in Australia.
