The 17th edition of the Asia Cup is all set to take place from September 9 to 26, marking the beginning of one of the biggest cricket tournaments in Asia this year. As preparations begin, a major update from PTI has revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Sai Sudharsan are likely to be in contention for a place in India’s squad.

These three young players were part of the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a five-match Test series between India and England, which ended in a draw. India won the final Test at The Oval by just 6 runs.

Although Jaiswal and Test captain Gill haven’t been involved in recent T20I matches due to a busy schedule, they have now had a month-long break after the Test series. This rest period is expected to help them be available and fresh for the Asia Cup.

BCCI Official Gives Major Update On India's Squad

At the same time, India are also preparing for a Test series against the West Indies, which begins on October 2 in Ahmedabad. Despite this overlap, the selectors are reportedly keeping their options open. If India qualifies for the Asia Cup final, scheduled for September 28, these players might still feature in both tournaments.

"There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till final, there are 6 T20 games and that's not much of a workload. But obviously with 17 member squads allowed for the Asia Cup, selectors will weigh options carefully," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Moreover, keeping in mind the pitch conditions in the UAE, where the tournament will be played and the T20 World Cup, which is just six months away, the inclusion of Jaiswal, Gill, and Sudharsan makes even more sense.

Both Jaiswal and Gill last played a T20 International in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, while Sudharsan’s only T20I appearance came in the same month against Zimbabwe.

Their recent form in the IPL 2025 has only boosted their chances further. Among the three, Sai Sudharsan was particularly impressive. He not only made his ODI debut in late 2023 but also had a fantastic T20 season this year.

In IPL 2025, Sudharsan scored 759 runs in 15 innings, making him the highest run-scorer of the tournament and earning him the Orange Cap. In his overall T20 career so far, he has scored 2,271 runs in 59 innings, with a strong strike rate of 138.05, including two centuries and 14 half-centuries.

India Squad For Asia Cup To Be Announced Soon

The official Indian squad for the Asia Cup is expected to be announced in the third week of August. India’s campaign will begin with a match against UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Cricket Ground.

Following that, they will face their biggest rivals, Pakistan, on September 14, and then play against Oman on September 19 in the group stage.
