Led by Shubman Gill, India recently enjoyed stellar success on English soil, securing a hard-fought two-all scoreline in the inaugural Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Considering India have found a new core of youngsters, the BCCI could reconsider Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's ODI career extension ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

BCCI Seeks Honest Answers From Rohit, Kohli Regarding Retirement: Report

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been absolute legends of Indian cricket. The talismanic duo has showcased its prowess across formats, with both batters scripting numerous historic wins for the Men in Blue.

However, Kohli and Rohit have already announced their retirements from Tests and T20Is, making themselves available for the ODI format. Although they have been prolific performers in ODIs, the legendary Indian batters will get a game time of just six matches (three ODIs against England and New Zealand each) ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is aiming to utilise the period as a preparatory phase for the marquee event. The board apparently considers trying out several youngsters before finalising India's batting department for the World Cup, reported PTI

In such a scenario, the board wants a clear answer from the senior-most players regarding their plans ahead of the mega event.

"Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

"Look, both Kohli and Rohit have made huge contributions to white ball cricket for the team and the sport in general. They have achieved almost everything. So, I don’t think nobody’s going to force their hand, but there will be some honest and professional conversations before the next ODI cycle starts to see where they stand mentally and physically. It depends on that,” he added.

Rohit and Kohli have had phenomenal ODI careers, amassing 11168 and 14181 runs, respectively. They could be seen next in action during India's Australia tour later this year where the Men in Blue will face the hosts in three ODIs and five T20Is.
