Senior journalist Vimal Kumar, who covered the 2024 T20 World Cup from ground zero, shared the story about how Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma weren’t initially on good terms when they first landed in the USA for the tournament.

Hardik Pandya’s differences with Rohit Sharma first flared when the former replaced the latter as the captain of Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Mumbai Indians won five trophies under Rohit’s captaincy, and a sudden power shift coupled with a lack of communication left Sharma heartbroken.

Since then, rumours had it that both the senior members of the Indian cricket team weren’t on good terms and had multiple fights in the dressing room.

Rohit, Hardik dissolve grudges!

However, heading into the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya sorted out the animosity like adults to accomplish their mutual goal of winning the trophy for country.

Vimal Kumar recently revealed on Two Sloggers Podcast that he saw Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya distant on day one of the net session in the USA. They didn’t speak to each other initially, but the very next day, Rohit sat Hardik down in a corner and had a long chat.

“When I went to the nets, I noticed what was going on between Hardik and Rohit. On the first day, they didn’t speak and were away from each other. But by the second day, I saw them come over, one after the other, and sit together in a corner, talking for a long time. That moment for me defined this team. There was no camera there; nothing. The way Rohit and Hardik were talking, I was like ‘what am I watching?’,”  Vimal Kumar said.

That moment defined the Indian dressing room atmosphere to Vimal Kumar who later added that the duo then began practising parallelly and the vibe appeared much relaxed. He added:

“There is so much going on in India with the public talking about their differences. After that, for the next three days, Rohit and Hardik would bat parallelly. And then Rohit would point out about his batting, bowling. When I saw that atmosphere and thought if they addressed such a complex issue, the elephant in the room. That vibe I saw demonstrated how relaxed the team atmosphere was.”

Hardik Pandya and Rohit Sharma’s camaraderie was on full display after the T20 World Cup finals as the captain kissed Hardik on the cheeks to celebrate his memorable final over.
