Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has given a big suggestion to the BCCI just before the 5-match Test series against England. He believes that Jasprit Bumrah should be appointed as India’s new Test captain and also advised the board to make Shubman Gill the vice-captain.

Rohit Sharma recently stepped away from Test cricket, and there have been strong rumours that Gill might be named the next captain. Bumrah, the present vice-captain, is reportedly not considered due to his injury history.

He might not be able to manage his workload and feature in all 5 Tests in England. Hence, Gill has emerged as the next best choice.

Wasim Jaffer Backs Bumrah As Test Captain Despite Fitness Concern

Amid widespread concern over Jasprit Bumrah’s workload management, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer feels that the fast bowler is a more natural choice for Test captaincy at the moment.

He further suggested that Shubman Gill should be appointed as vice-captain so that he can be groomed for the future without too much pressure.

"I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn't want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC - stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest. This way Gill could also be groomed without the pressure of being the full time captain," Jaffer wrote on his X handle.

Interestingly, Bumrah was Rohit’s deputy during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played last year and even captained India in the first Test against Australia, which India won.

But BCCI has been said to have been reluctant to offer him a full-time captaincy position because of workload issues.

Team India Likely To Leave For England In First Week Of June

India's first batch of players for the England Test tour will reportedly leave on June 6, shortly after the IPL 2025 final. Head coach Gautam Gambhir might accompany this group, which includes players whose teams exit the IPL early. The rest will travel later. The squad announcement is expected around May 23, with the new Test captain, likely Shubman Gill or Jasprit Bumrah, to be revealed during a press conference.
