Former Indian cricketer and BCCI selector Kris Srikkanth has urged India to rethink before naming Shubman Gill as their Test captain. Recently, Rohit Sharma hung up his boots from Tests, and, if reports are to be believed, Gill is the frontrunner to replace the Mumbaikar as India's Test skipper.
Srikkanth Against BCCI's Plans To Appoint Gill As Test Captain
However, former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth is baffled by the BCCI's decision to prefer Gill as Rohit's successor to the Test throne. Srikkanth believes Gill has yet to cement his place in the Test side and hence India shouldn't burden him with leadership responsibilities.
The ex-opener, who played a vital role in India's historic World Cup triumph in 1983, further asked the BCCI selection committee to prefer one between Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant to fill the vacancy.
"He (Gill) is not even a certainty in Test cricket. The captaincy should be given to Jasprit Bumrah, and if he is not fit or available for any match, then KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant should lead India," Srikkanth was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
KL Rahul Should Bat At 4 For India In Tests- Kris Srikkanth
After Virat Kohli's retirement, filling his void at number four has emerged as a challenging task for India. While Shubman Gill could actually be dropped one spot down, Srikkanth feels KL Rahul could be the perfect candidate to replace Kohli at that position.
"Coming to the question about India's next No. 4 in Test cricket, for me, KL Rahul should be given that position. He can be India's lynchpin going forward in Test cricket. He has got the right technique, and the management should give him that fixed role," Srikkanth added.
The Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee will unveil India's new Test captain, likely on May 23. The Indian squad for the upcoming England Tests might be picked on that day itself.
