In a candid interview, Indian superstar pacer Jasprit Bumrah citied the examples of legends such as Kapil Dev and Imran Khan to suggest that fast bowlers make brave captains. This statement came just days after BCCI snubbed him to appoint Shubman Gill as India’s vice captain in white ball format.

Jasprit Bumrah was mysteriously ignored by BCCI earlier this month as they appointed Shubman Gill as India’s vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is alike. Moreover, if some rumours are to be believed, Gill could embrace the same responsibility in the Test format as well.

However, with Jasprit Bumrah also being a three-format player and the present vice-captain in red ball cricket, his snub caused a stir on social media.

Meanwhile, in the latest interview, Jasprit Bumrah took a subtle dig at BCCI to suggest that fast bowlers can also make brave captains if given an opportunity. To back his point, the pacer used the example of Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who won World Cups for their countries as leaders.

Bowlers are the smart ones: Jasprit Bumrah

“I think leadership requires you to be brave. So I am also always of the opinion that we see whenever we’ve seen Pat Cummins doing really well. When I was young I have seen Wasim Akram being the captain. Kapil Dev has won the World Cup for India. Imran Khan has won a World Cup for Pakistan. So bowlers are the smart ones," Bumrah said.

Not only that, Bumrah opined that bowlers are always on the firing line and do not have the privilege of hiding behind the bat. Hence, the disadvantages make them brave and smart at the same time.

“I feel the bowlers are the smart people because you know, they have to get the batsman out and we are obviously always fighting the odds because the grounds are shorter, the bats are better. They’re not hiding behind a flat wicket. We’re right in the firing line. I feel that because of all of these challenges, you always find new ways the bowlers find different ways of succeeding and fighting the odds," he added.

However, as far as captaincy is concerned, Bumrah refused to put out a controversial statement saying those decisions are way above his pay grade.

“That is something that I don’t decide I cannot go to you know the team and say now you have to make me Captain. I don’t have that much power and it is above my paygrade," he concluded.

Notably, Bumrah has, in fact, led India in a Test match against England back in 2022.
