In a recent press conference ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir reflected on a missed opportunity from their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). 

Gambhir expressed regret over not fully utilizing Suryakumar Yadav's potential during their stint together at KKR a decade ago.

Gambhir admitted to Sportskeeda, "A leader's role is to identify the best potential and show it to the world. If there is one regret that I have in my seven years of captaincy, it is that we never managed to use Suryakumar Yadav to the best of his potential. The reason was down to combinations."

Suryakumar, who has now been named captain for the Sri Lanka T20Is, responded with characteristic wit. 

"To abhi karlenge poora potential ko use (We will fulfil that potential now)," he said with a smile, highlighting their ongoing bond and understanding. 

"Our bond has always been special. We have talked a lot. We both understand what we want to say just by our body language. Sometimes, even without expressing anything, we understand what each of us wants to say. I am very excited for this journey. Let's see what happens," he further added.

As Gambhir takes on his first assignment as head coach in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka starting July 27 in Pallekele, Suryakumar remains committed to continuing the aggressive style of play that defined Rohit Sharma’s tenure.
