The BCCI recently appointed Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir's inaugural challenge will be leading India in their forthcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is.

At a press conference on Monday in Mumbai, Gambhir, alongside selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, addressed key issues ahead of the tour.

A focal point of discussion was the critical matter of workload management, particularly concerning Jasprit Bumrah, one of India's premier fast bowlers.

Rare bowler that anyone would want: India's head coach

Gambhir emphasized the significance of managing Bumrah's workload effectively.

"I've said it before, workload management for someone like Jasprit (Bumrah) is important. He is one rare bowler that anyone would want. You want him to play important games. That's why the workload management for not just him but fast bowlers is important,” Gambhir stated.

He also noted that with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retiring from T20Is, there is an expectation that they will be available for the remaining formats, thus strengthening India's squad for upcoming fixtures.

The 30-year-old speedster, who has faced several fitness challenges, including missing the 2022 T20 World Cup and undergoing back surgery in early 2023, has demonstrated his value to the team with strong performances in recent tournaments.

His return to form was highlighted by his captaincy debut against Ireland and his pivotal role in India's successful 2023 ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup campaigns.
