In a concerning turn of events for Sri Lanka cricket, pacer Binura Fernando's participation in the first T20I of the three-game series against India, scheduled for Saturday, is currently doubtful due to an unfortunate bout of the flu.

The Indian cricket team landed in Sri Lanka earlier this week to feature in a white ball bilateral series comprising three T20Is and as many ODIs. The T20I series is set to begin from tomorrow with the opening game scheduled at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Notably, the upcoming series will be Gautam Gambhir's first assignment as India's official head coach, and hence, anticipation is high amongst the Indian fans.

However, while the Indian fans are excited, a major development in the Sri Lanka squad has left the home fans concerned. As per multiple media reports, leading pacer Binura Fernando is down with flu just hours before the first T20I.

He is currently under the observation of local doctors, with future participation uncertain. Sri Lanka have a strong sense of feeling that Fernando might be unavailable for Saturday's game and his potential absence could be a significant setback for the team.

All-rounder Ramesh Mendis has been called up as immediate backup. Notably, if Binura Fernando gets ruled out of the first contest, Sri Lanka will be three bowlers short as Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chameera have already been ruled out of the series.

Interestingly, Sri Lanka is undergoing a transition phase and, hence, the squad will be stepping out under the leadership of Charith Asalanka as Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from his leadership role following the T20 World Cup debacle.
