As Pakistan bowed out of the T20 World Cup with a win against Ireland, under-fire captain Babar Azam admitted that his team failed to perform as a unit, which led to an early exit from the tournament.

Pakistan cricket team saved their pride in the final group game of the 2024 T20 World Cup by winning against Ireland.

In a nominal 107 runs chase, the men in green struggled due to a collapse before captain Babar Azam finished things off with a 32 runs-steady knock.

That being said, Babar Azam blamed the batting unit for the unwarranted collapse and revealed that he had to bat deep and finish with the tailenders.

"Yes, we finished well. I think when we started with the ball and took early wickets. It went well but with the bat, we kept losing wickets and I had to stay there and get the team over the line with the tailenders," Babar Azam said in post-game interview.

Azam added that Lauderhill conditions suited Pakistan’s bowlers and they did well to capitalise on it. But again the batters let the team down. Reflecting on his batting position, Babar Azam said he is flexible to bat anywhere as per team’s needs.

"In bowling, the conditions suited our fast bowlers but as a batting unit, we struggled. If the team wants me to bat at 3, I am okay, if they want me to open I am happy to do that as well (when asked if he would continue to bat at 3 or open for Pakistan in T20Is),"  he added.

Meanwhile, Babar Azam broke his silence on Pakistan’s humiliating campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Azam backed his players and promised to make things right after proper analysis.

"We have a bunch of good players. We will go and sit back and analyse what went wrong. Positive, we have played a few close games. As a team, we were not good in the tournament. As individuals, there were a few performances but as a unit, we didn't do well," Azam concluded.

The captain added that despite a couple of individual brilliance, the men in green failed to step up as a complete unit, which was the key factor behind their downfall.
