MS Dhoni has been widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of Indian cricket and time and again has delivered the desired performances with the bat and behind the wickets for the team. Former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra recently regarded India’s most successful captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni a cult hero.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020, however, unlike most of the retired players the craze among the fans for the former wicket-keeper batsman kept getting higher. After keeping himself away from international cricket, MS Dhoni has led the IPL team franchise Chennai Super Kings twice towards the title in 2021 and 2023.

Aakash Chopra Reflects on the Endless Affection for MS Dhoni Among Fans Ahead of IPL 2024

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra discussed how with the progression of MS Dhoni’s career, he kept gaining respect and love from the fans. Chopra compared the admiration of the fans for MS Dhoni with that of India’s most eminent former batsman, Sachin Tendulkar.

Aakash Chopra said,

"Mahendra Singh Dhoni is a cult hero. As his career progressed, the love and respect kept going to a different level. The love and respect he gets is as much as I saw Sachin Paaji getting."

Further, while talking about the selflessness of MS Dhoni, Chopra emphasised how the former captain stepped away from his Test career. Dhoni made way for Virat Kohli, India's most successful Test captain, after training the attacking top-order batsman for years. Chopra said,

"Generally, you are lingering on. You feel the respect is going but the guy doesn't want to leave and keeps playing. He did not do that. In 2015, when we were in Australia, he said that he was done with Test cricket. He said that he has prepared Virat and that he can take the team forward.”

After repeated speculations of retirement, the 42-year-old MS Dhoni will once again lead the defending champions Chennai Super Kings for the 17th season of the Indian Premier League. The team will play their first match of the season against Royal Challengers Bangalore on 22nd March at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai.
