Former Indian captain Kapil Dev recently backed the BCCI for excluding prominent players from the annual contract list for 2023-24 to promote the popularity of domestic cricket.

The BCCI’s bold decision has gained mass popularity from the cricket fraternity as the former players have come forward to back the board’s judgment. The BCCI’s annual contract list saw multiple promotions and demotions, but the highlight of the list was the exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer.

As per the reports, the batters lost their annual contracts after they refused to participate in the ongoing Ranji trophy 2024. While Shreyas Iyer returned to Ranji Trophy 2024 for the second semi-final match after the snub, Ishan Kishan was recently seen playing in DY Patil T20 Cup 2024.

‘No one is bigger than the nation’ - Kapil Dev lauds BCCI for promoting Domestic Cricket

In an exclusive chat with the Times of India, the World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev highlighted that no player is bigger than the country. He urged the players to play first-class and domestic cricket while emphasising that the promotion of domestic cricket will benefit the country in numerous ways.

Kapil Dev said,

"I am so happy that the cricket board has taken a step forward for first-class cricket. The boys must play that, it's good for the country. Whatever is good for the country, I feel happy about that. Yes, few players will suffer...kuch ko takleef hogi...hone do, lekin desh se badhkar koi nahi hai. Well done. (Some Players will suffer, but let it be, because it is good for the nation, and no one is bigger than that).”

The BCCI annual contract list also saw the exclusion of experienced players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Umesh Yadav and Cheteshwar Pujara which indicated the board’s decision to look away from these players.

BCCI also introduced fast bowling contracts to elevate the participation of fast bowlers in the team. Many stupendous players like Akash Deep and Umran Malik found their names on the list.
