Vishmi Gunaratne, the 18-year-old Sri Lankan top-order batter, scripted history earlier today by becoming the second Sri Lankan woman to hit a century in the ODI format after legendary captain Chamari Athapaththu.

Sri Lanka, in women's cricket, unearthed a budding superstar in Vishmi Gunaratne as they took the field against Ireland in the first ODI of the three-game series. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed for a golden duck.

But before Ireland could stamp their authority, Vishmi Gunaratne stepped up to stitch a 100-run partnership with Hasini Perara.

Gunarate went on to slam a scintillating century off just 98 balls and became the only second Sri Lankan woman after Athapaththu to score a hundred in the ODI format.

Needless to say, Vishmi has grabbed the limelight with her extraordinary debut performance, and here's everything you need to know about the promising young talent.

Who is Vishmi Gunaratne?

Vishmi Gunaratne, born on 22 August 2000 in Sri Lanka, first rose to fame with a quadruple-century score in an inter-school competition.

She later signed up for Chilaw Marians Cricket Club and played in the Sri Lanka Women's Division One tournament in the 2021-22 domestic season.

Gunaratne once again impressed with a 138* knock against Sri Lanka Army Sports Club Second XI.

Having said that, Vishmi Gunarate was picked in Sri Lanka's national squad for the 2021 Women's World Cup qualifiers, but ended up warming the bench. Eventually, in January 2022, she received her due and made her T20 debut in 2021/22 Commonwealth Games Cricket Qualifiers.

Vishmi had to skip the Pakistan tour due to school exams but returned to play against India in July 2022 and slammed her highest T20I score.

With the newly found fame, Gunaratne went on to lead Sri Lanka in the 2023 U19 Women's World Cup and ended up being her team's leading run scorer. She also featured in the 2023 T20 World Cup and scored 60 runs in four games.
