In his 6 month tenure as Indian team head coach, Gautam Gambhir became a part of two humiliating series losses. Amid this, an old video of him criticising former head coach Ravi Shastri has resurfaced where he questioned Shastri's credentials as a player after the latter referred to India as the best overseas team.
Ravi Shastri coached India's senior cricket team from 2017 to 2021 and under his mentorship, the team won two back-to-back Border-Gavaskar Trophies against Australia. The men in blue also stayed as the no.1 Test team throughout this period and naturally, Shastri boasted the team's overseas record.
Gambhir once questioned Shastri's achievements as coach
However, Gautam Gambhir sharply criticised Ravi Shastri for this claim. He argued that it was exaggerated given India's actual record in overseas matches during that period. In an old interview with News18, Gambhir pointed out that while Shastri might have been over enthusiastic about the team's performance as the record did not back up his claims.
“I can only laugh because I’m sure either Ravi Shastri doesn’t know the records or hasn’t watched the series in the past. When you haven’t won anything, you do feel that the team you coach is the best. That’s because you haven’t won anything at all. What he won was the ODI World Series. There was nothing else that he had won. I don’t remember if he has won anything outside India ever," Gambhir said.
Gambhir also questioned Shastri's credentials as a player, stating that he never won anything significant. And when someone with no success coaches a team, he thinks his setup is the best. However, Gautam urged Shastri to review old records which do not match his statements.
Now, years later, Gautam Gambhir finds himself in a precarious position with India spoiling its legacy at home. The upcoming Australia series will prove to be a true litmus test as BCCI is increasing scrutiny.
Gambhir, Rohit clash over differences in opinion
In a latest report by Hindustan Times, insiders claim that head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma are not on the same page on strategies and pitch curation. So far, the duo have failed to reach common ground on multiple issues, which contributed to India getting whitewashed at home by New Zealand. Besides strategies, Rohit and Gambhir are also at crossroads over pitch curation.
