The Indian cricket has fallen apart after winning the T20 World Cup title, a couple of months ago. Since then, they have lost the ODI series Vs Sri Lanka, and were clean swept by the Kiwis in the recently concluded Test series as the duo of Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir have come under the hammer.
Rift between Gambhir and Rohit?
Before the start of the series, a 3-0 India victory was predicted by everyone, but the Kiwis sprung a surprise as they whitewashed the Indian side and that has put India's WTC finale chances in jeopardy.
As per Hindustan Times, the captain/coach duo of Rohit and Gambhir are not on the same page and clearly have difference of opinion. They haven't been able to reach common ground on many things and it has led to the demise of the Indian cricket. In Gambhir's first series, India shockingly lost an ODI series against Sri Lanka, and now this whitewash has put question mark on his coaching credentials.
Some of Gambhir's decision making has come under scrutiny, which includes picking Harshit Rana in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad, and also selecting Nitish Kumar Reddy over away conditions specialist, Shardul Thakur.
Rift related to India's playing style
There is also a rift related to India's gamestyle in Test cricket. While Gambhir emphasises to “play Test cricket like Test cricket should be played” and “improve defensive play”, Rohit has the mantra to play an aggressive brand of cricket in Tests as well.
There is also clear misunderstanding when it comes to preparing pitches at home. Under the previous regime of Rohit and Rahul Dravid, rank turners were abolished as it was believed that it is harming the Indian batters.
However, as per reports, Gambhir has gone back to asking for rank turners so that the ball turns right from Day 1.
