Gautam Gambhir took over the head coach role of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid after India's victorious T20 World Cup campaign. His success with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 played a big role in his appointment and a lot was expected from him. However, his tenure as India's head coach has been a mix-bag so far.

India have delivered some amazing performances, but have lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka and now they have been brought down to their knees by Kiwis. India have lost their first Test series at home since 2012 as the BlackCaps registered two consecutive Test wins in Bengaluru and Pune. So, Gautam Gambhir is facing a lot of heat from the media, fans and cricket pundits with questions over the tactics employed by India in the Test series.

Ravi Shastri Defends Gautam Gambhir

Amidst all the criticism, Ravi Shastri, the former Indian coach has defended Gautam Gambhir. Shastri had a fruitful tenure as head coach, especially in Test cricket as India never lost a Test series at home during his time and also won two back-to-back series Down Under.

Shastri urged people to be little patient with Gautam Gambhir as he has just taken over the job. He added that coaching India is never an easy job as team has big following and there is lot of criticism even after a single loss. The former Indian all-rounder and esteemed commentator also stated that Gambhir is new to his job and he will learn from the experience.

"Gautam Gambhir has just taken over the job. It's never easy being the coach of a team that has such a big following. It's still early days in his career as a coach. But he'll soon learn."

India would now look to bounce back in the third and final Test of the series which is scheduled to start on November 1 in Mumbai.
