'I Don't Understand This': Sunil Gavaskar on Naveen-ul-Haq's Shut-Out-The-Noise Celebration

Mumbai Indians (MI) thumped past the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Eliminator of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 last evening, winning the match comprehensively by 81 runs. Chasing 183, LSG were bundled out for 101, courtesy Akash Madhwal's maiden five-for in IPL.

For LSG, the only bright light in a dark night was pacer Naveen-ul-Haq, who rocked MI's batting order picking a four-for. Naveen's victims included Rohit Sharma, Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. The Afghanistan pacer, who has been in the news after his much-publicised spat with Virat Kohli, has made the shut-out-the-noise celebration quite viral.

Interestingly, the same celebration is done by regular LSG skipper KL Rahul after scoring a hundred.

However, during commentary on Star Sports, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar failed to decode the purpose of such a celebration after Ul-Haq took Green's wicket.

Here's what Gavaskar said

"Brilliant, terrific delivery. This delivery was 105 while the previous one was 133. It was so deceptive. And then he celebrates but I have not understood this celebration,"

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar spoke in depth about how one should celebrate after taking a wicket or scoring a hundred.

"He has had issues with the crowd. You should celebrate by chucking your ears. This is the time he has got a wicket. He has got to listen to the applause. When somebody scores a hundred also, don't chuck your ears. Listen to the applause, chuck your hand behind the ears and say 'hello, now can I hear you?'. That's how the celebration should be. That's old me saying this, by the way,"

Despite all distractions, Naveen delivered for LSG in his maiden IPL season, picking up 11 wickets in eight games.

MI will take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2 on Friday in Ahmedabad.
