Mumbai Indians emerged victorious in the Eliminator and stormed their way to the second qualifier of the ongoing IPL 2023 season. The Rohit Sharma-led side flattened the Lucknow Super Giants in an all-important clash by 81 runs in Chennai, courtesy of Akash Madhwal’s sublime four-over spell.

The 29-year-old uncapped speedster snared five wickets for just five runs and was the prime architect in dusting out the LSG for just 101.

After the match, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma was all praise for Madhwal, and claimed that the team management was always aware of his potential.

Rohit Sharma reveals importance of prioritizing youngsters

Defending 182, Mumbai Indians’ new-ball pacer Akash Madhwal removed LSG opener Prerak Mankad for just three within the powerplay. The speedster returned to mop up the tail as he added four more wickets to his name, all while conceding just five runs in his three-and-a-half overs.

Winning captain Rohit Sharma praised Madhwal for his spell, and claimed that he was well aware of the youngster’s potential with the ball. Talking about making it to the second qualifier, he said:

“I had definitely thought of making it to the second qualifier... We managed our work, and scrambled through it. Akash Madhwal was part of the season last year. He didn't get to play. We knew what he had, and we needed somebody to bowl at the back end. Having seen him, I was confident he could get the job done for us,”

Sharma also highlighted the importance of his team’s talent scouts, and how their picks have gone on to play for India at the highest level. The legendary batter added that the team management makes the youngsters feel special and a part of the unit. The cricketer further praised his side’s fielding effort against the LSG, which ultimately led to three crucial and decisive runouts in the game.

“Talking about scouts, we have seen so many guys have gone on to play for India and done well. First and foremost, it's important to make them feel special and part of the team. They play lot of domestic cricket, but this is a different ball game... Our job is to make sure they are comfortable. As a team, we enjoyed the fielding. We want to keep getting better, and throw ourselves... We knew coming to Chennai, one man won't take us through.”

Madhwal will now turn up alongside captain Sharma in Mumbai Indians’ subsequent hurdle, the Qualifier 2, against Gujarat Titans. The match will be played out at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on May 26. The winner of the contest will set a date with CSK for the title clash on May 28 at the same venue.
