'We Were Very, Very Poor in Terms of ...': Kumar Sangakkara on RR's Embarrassing Loss Against GT

After a winning run in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, the Rajasthan Royals have found it difficult to continue that momentum, having lost their last four games out of five. Last evening against defending champions Gujarat Titans, the Sanju Samson-led side just crumbled and suffered a crushing defeat by nine wickets in Jaipur.

Batting first Royals managed just 118 runs after Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmed rocked their line-up. In reply, Titans without any troubles achieved the target in 13.5 overs with contributions from their top-three.

RR's director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara has called the loss embarrassing and stated that the team failed to make use of starts. In the post-match conference, Sangakkara went on to talk about his side's a lack of intent against the Afghanistan spinners, and praised Noor in particular.

Here's what Sanga said

"We were very, very poor in terms of capitalizing on the starts we got. We were showing intent for a while, but we were a little bit reckless, and then we had very, very little intent against the two spinners. Rashid bowled brilliantly, I thought Noor bowled really well as well, but that's the time the batters need to step up and show more and more intent.

Even a defence in T20 cricket, one has to have the intent of wanting to score. You work down the sequence of 6, 4, 3, 2, 1; or, if you're under pressure, you go 4, 3, 2, 1. But you are always looking for opportunities to score, and at the minimum, get off strike. And once that intent is shown, it doesn't matter how good a bowler you are, you are always thinking that you can't give the batter anything loose because you're going to get put away. So that's one area that we've got to really look at."

Apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal, no other top-order batter has managed to hit peak form in the last few matches, which has forced the late middle-order to play unlike their aggressive self.

The former Sri Lankan legend, however, backed the likes of Jos Buttler and Shimron Hetmyer to come good soon.

Royals with this loss have dropped down to fourth position, while Titans have a healthy three-point gap at the top.
