Australian spinner Fawad Ahmed is set to make a return to Melbourne Renegades after a gap of eight years. The cricketer has been signed on as a replacement for injured batter Shaun Marsh, who recently sustained a low-grade hamstring strain.

Ahmed previously represented the Renegades in the second and third seasons of BBL. Since then, he has turned up for Sydney Thunder, Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers over a total BBL span of 95 matches.

The 40-year-old Australian has played three ODIs and two T20I matches for his country, all during the tour to England in 2013. With 164 caps, he is also a T20 veteran, having played for several globally recognised leagues like the PSL and Caribbean Premier League.

Melbourne Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten expressed his excitement over Ahmed’s signing. He said:

“Fawad is a proven performer around the world, with our overseas spinners departing after this match we’re pleased to sign a player of his calibre to complement our current bowlers.”

Notably, Renegades’ Afghanistan import Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be playing his final match of the season this Saturday, when his side squares up against the Hurricanes.

The Aaron Finch-led team is currently placed at number five on the BBL 2022-23 points table by securing four wins out of their eight games of the season.
