Peter Handscomb has scripted a remarkable innings with Victoria to enter the record books in Australia's domestic first-class competition.

The 31-year-old Australian batter slammed an unbeaten 281 against Western Australia at the Junction Oval. It is the highest individual Sheffield Shield score in more than a decade.

In the process, Handscomb surpassed his previous best of 215 against New South Wales in 2016. The Victoria skipper decided to declare the innings, thus ending his chances of charting a triple century.

Meanwhile, Handscomb formed a record fifth wicket partnership of 338 with Sam Harper.

Victoria declared their innings on a score of 616-4 at lunch on day four with a lead of 150.

Handscomb will be hoping that his performances in domestic cricket will open the door for him to get into the Australian Test squad for the upcoming series against the West Indies and South Africa this summer and a tour of India early next year.

As far as the match against Western Australia is concerned, Victoria will be hoping to win the tie and climb up the Marsh Sheffield Shield 2022-23 rankings. They are currently fourth in the standings.
