The Indian team will launch their T20I World Cup 2022 campaign with a high-octane clash against Pakistan on October 23. The BCCI recently announced their 15-player squad for the tournament, set to be helmed by Rohit Sharma.

Ahead of the main event, former all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his preferred Indian XI for their opening match. Notably, the cricketer-turned-commentator picked Dinesh Karthik as the wicketkeeper of the side, while excluding Rishabh Pant from the playing XI.

Irfan Pathan picks his preferred XI for tournament opener

Irfan Pathan picked Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik as his ideal middle-order batters for the Indian team. Meanwhile, he placed Virat Kohli at number three while picking captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as the openers of the side.

Moreover, the former cricketer is of the opinion that the Indian team should start out with at least one spinner in an experienced playing XI. The 37-year-old picked Yuzvendra Chahal instead of Ravichandran Ashwin as the team’s leading spinner, in a bowling unit which constitutes Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar as his first-choice fast bowlers.

“So, from the top, my playing 11 would be - Rohit, KL Rahul, number three - Virat (Kohli), number four - Suryakumar Yadav, number five - Deepak Hooda, number six - Hardik Pandya, number seven - Dinesh Karthik, number eight will be a right arm leg spinner so it would be (Yuzvendra) Chahal, 9 to 11, here there will be Jasprit Bumrah, Harshal Patel and along with that you can go for Bhuvneshwar Kumar.”
