Trent Rockets piled on Welsh Fire’s pain in their final group fixture of the ongoing The Hundred Women’s 2022 competition.

The Rockets, under the leadership of Australian star Elyse Villani, extinguished the Fire by eight wickets in a one-sided affair at Trent Bridge.

The Hundred 2022: Captain Villani leads from the front

Earlier, Welsh Fire skipper Tammy Beaumont won the toss and had opted to bat first. Apart from her ambitious six-ball 16 at the top, none of her batters displayed a rapid-scoring intensity or a wicket-preserving ability as they crawled their way to 100-8 off their 100 balls.

For the Rockets, Bryony Smith, Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver all collected two wickets each while Australian enigma machine Alana King picked one of her economical 20-ball spell.

In response, the hosts hunted down the entirety of Fire’s total with 18 balls to spare. Captain Villani herself scored a well-crafted 55 off just 40 deliveries, hitting eight of them for boundaries and sending one over the rope.

The dominant outing at home gave Rockets their third win of the season, as they climb to number three on the points table. They will have to wait out for the remaining results of the tournament before confirming their fate for the knockouts.

Brief scores:

Welsh Fire (Women): 100-8 (100 balls)

Nicola Carey 27 (29), Sarah Bryce 23 (26)
Katherine Brunt 2-14, Bryony Smith 2-14

Trent Rockets (Women): 102-2 (82 balls)

Elyse Villani 55* (40), Mignon du Preez 32* (20)
Lauren Filer 1-13, Alex Hartley 1-27

Trent Rockets won by 8 wickets
