As the WPL 2024 season enters its final week, defending champions Mumbai Indians Women will square off with Gujarat Giants Women at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on March 9 from 7.30 PM onwards.

While MI-W will be looking to seal a place in the playoffs, GG-W is more or less out of the tournament after enduring four losses in five games.

After a humbling loss against Delhi Capitals Women, Mumbai Indians Women bounced back to winning ways quickly after trashing UP Warriorz the previous night.

Despite the fall of early wickets, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Amelia Kerr, and Sajana’s meaningful contributions guided the team to a fighting total of 160 runs.

Shabnim Ismail and Saika Ishaque later bossed the chase by dismantling UP’s batting order inside the first 10 overs.

From 69/6, Deepti Sharma toiled hard to make a game out of it, but the lack of support from the other end foiled her resistance.

Regardless, with the 42-run win, MI-W are rock solid on the points table in second place. With a mere two games left on the league stage schedule, the defending champions are most likely to qualify for the playoffs with a healthy net run rate.

Gujarat Giants Women took off with a dominating win over RCB-W after losing four games in the tournament. Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt’s onslaught at the top helped Gujarat Giants post the highest first innings score of the season i.e 199 runs. 

Royal Challengers Bangalore Women succumbed under pressure, and despite Georgia Wareham’s 48-run fighting knock, RCB fell short of 19 runs at the end.

With that, GG-W finally tasted victory this year. However, the win perhaps arrived a little too late for Gujarat Giants. With the playoff race closing down in the final week of the league stage, GG-W cannot make it with a mere 2 points to their tally. 

Even if the Beth Mooney-led side wins everything from here, the odds of advancing to the next stage of the tournament look bleak at the moment.
