In a significant setback for the Gujarat Giants, star batter Harleen Deol has been officially ruled out of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 due to a knee injury sustained during their clash against UP Warriorz.

The injury, which occurred during fielding in the team's third league game, has kept Deol sidelined since then.

Harleen, known for her attacking right-hand batting style, had been struggling with her left knee even before the tournament commenced.

Despite this, she managed to play the initial matches, contributing scores of 8, 18, and 22 against Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, respectively.

Her absence poses a significant challenge for the Giants, who have already faced multiple injury setbacks this season.

To fill the void left by Deol, Vidarbha batter Bharti Fulmali has been roped in as a replacement player. Fulmali was seen participating in the team's training sessions, hinting at her potential inclusion in the squad for upcoming matches.

The Giants, under the leadership of Beth Mooney, have struggled to find their rhythm in the tournament, suffering four consecutive losses before finally clinching a win against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

With Deol out of action, the team faces the daunting task of regaining momentum in the league.

Furthermore, the Giants have also been troubled by injuries to other key players, including vice-captain Sneh Rana, who missed two consecutive games due to illness. However, Rana is expected to be available for selection in the team's next fixture against defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Despite the challenges, the Giants remain determined to turn their fortunes around in the league.

Mentored by former India Women’s team captain Mithali Raj, the team is striving to improve upon their performance from the previous season, where they finished at the bottom of the table with just two wins.

As the Gujarat Giants prepare to face Mumbai Indians on March 9, they will look to overcome the absence of Harleen Deol and capitalize on the inclusion of Bharti Fulmali to steer their campaign towards success.
