Once again after getting a decent start, Shubman Gill threw his wicket away on day 1 of the second Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. Nandre Burger bowled a length delivery angling away from off and Gill poked the delivery from the backfoot only for the ball to take the outside edge. Jansen dived to his left at gully and took an outstanding catch.

You can watch the dismissal here:

Gill played some delightful shots and looked solid during his stay at the crease. He struck 35 runs in 55 balls, a knock which was laced with 7 fours. Everytime there was width, Gill pounced on that and drove the ball sumptuously.

However, Indian batsman, once again, couldn’t convert and India, as a result, lost their third wicket in the 21st over. During his innings, Gill also reached the milestone of 1000 runs in Test cricket.

The 24-year-old batter has played has played 20 Tests for his country so far and accumulated 1030 runs at an average of 31.21. He has 2 hundreds and 4 half-centuries to his name. Gill is currently batting at number three position in the Test batting line-up and by his own admission, it’s his favourite position.

The team management certainly believe in his abilities to offer him that position. Earlier, Cheteshwar Pujara used to bat at three but the veteran batting is no longer in India’s Test team.

India Shot Down On 153!

Team India were dominating the play 1 hour before the tea on day 1 of the Test match. They had bundled out South Africa for just 55 runs inside the first session of the Test match, thanks to memorable bowling spell from M Siraj, who picked six wickets for just 15 runs in his 9-over quota. Jasprit Bumrah (2 for 25) and Mukesh Kumar (2 for 2) also supported him well as India left South Africa in dire straits.

The South African bowlers bowled a lot of half-volleys in the second innings and Rohit Sharma showed no mercy. He gave the team a lightening quick start but fell for 39 off 50 balls. Gill too was looking solid but Nandre Burger also sent him back.

Burger took his third wicket of the innings after he dismissed Shreyas Iyer to leave India in some trouble at 110 for 4. India though were going well with KL Rahul and Virat Kohli trying to stitch a partnership but Rahul's wicket triggered a dramatic collapse and India lost their last six wickets without scoring a run.
