Indian cricket fans had a mixed bag of emotions in 2023. Despite securing convincing victories in several bilateral series and the Asia Cup, India faltered on big occasions, losing to Australia in the finals of the World Test Championship and the World Cup.
However, some individuals stole the show with exceptional performances, helping India clinch some memorable wins in 2023.
Meanwhile, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has picked last year's best performer with the bat for India. As quoted by Sportskeeda, Gavaskar named young sensation Shubman Gill as the breakout performer, considering his exploits across the formats.
"Breakout performer, I would imagine would be Shubman Gill for the way he batted throughout the 2023 season in all formats of the game. Test cricket, at the start, he was unstoppable."
"Towards the end, he tapered off in Test cricket but the ODI and T20 performances were exceptional. So he would be the breakout performer as far as the men's team is concerned."
Notably, Gill was India's most successful batter in 2023, amassing 2154 runs at an average of 46.82 and a strike rate of 101.22 across formats. Apart from Virat Kohli, the stylish right-hander was the only Indian to breach the 2000-run mark in international cricket last year. However, his form dipped towards the back end of the year, reducing his average significantly.
The Punjab-born will be seen in action during India's upcoming Test match against South Africa in Cape Town starting on Wednesday, January 3.
