Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar issued an invaluable word of advice for South African speedster Nandre Burger after the latter was found employing sledging tactics on visiting batsman Virat Kohli.

During the first Indian innings on Day 1 of the second Test match at Cape Town, Kohli made his way to the crease following the dismissal of opening batsman and team captain Rohit Sharma. The cricketer faced Burger upfront, only to be welcomed by a barrage of well-pitched short deliveries.

The batting veteran even escaped with a streaky boundary early in his innings, considering Proteas skipper Dean Elgar had left the third slip region vacant for the newcomer.

Kohli’s early survival further agitated Burger, who kept enticing the legendary Indian batsman with tactical lengths and occasional stare-downs.

Virat Kohli, who often basks at the face of adversity and at the edge of enemy lines, was at the receiving end of a number of silent stare-downs from South African pace prodigy Nandre Burger.

All-time great Sunil Gavaskar, who was on commentary duties at the time of Kohli’s ordeal at Newlands, issued a word of advice for the young Proteas pacer. He said:

“Virat Kohli is the wrong man to do your aggression.”

Virat Kohli made the most of his early reprieve as he belted Burger for a confident off-drive, before picking two more boundaries off Marco Jansen to signal his intent early in his innings.

Earlier in the day, Indian speedsters Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah collectively demolished South Africa’s entire batting line-up within a session for just 55 off 23.2 overs.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, in response, ensured his side had the first-innings lead in pocket by the completion of the first 10 overs of the innings.
